As December sets in and the final deadlines of the year begin to taper off, many people look for a short escape to reset before January’s fast pace returns. Whether you want snow, sun, stillness or something completely new, here are several destinations that offer a refreshing break during the Christmas period.

1. Germany and Austria – For the classic Christmas market experience

If you’re a true Christmas enthusiast, it’s hard to beat Germany or Austria in December. Their Christmas markets remain some of the most atmospheric in Europe, with glowing wooden stalls, steaming cups of Glühwein, handmade crafts and that unmistakable scent of cinnamon and pine. Cities like Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Cologne tend to enjoy real winter weather at this time of year, often with snow-dusted streets that elevate the festive atmosphere. For travellers who love the traditional Christmas aesthetic, this is where the season feels most authentic.

2. Morocco – A warm escape for the Mediterranean-at-heart

Not everyone wants to wrap up in winter layers (including myself). Morocco is ideal for anyone who prefers warmth and vibrancy to cold nights and snowfall. December brings comfortable temperatures, vivid souks and a sensory, colourful break from northern Europe’s deep winter. For those craving something a little different, Morocco offers culture, cuisine and landscapes that feel like an adventure without being far from home. In a similar spirit, Tunis is also a great option – close, energetic and rich in history, offering a refreshing contrast to the traditional winter break.

3. Turkey – A quick, exciting weekend in Istanbul

With Istanbul only about two and a half hours away by direct flight, Turkey is one of the easiest getaways from Malta. The city sits at the meeting point of cultures, making it a compelling destination for a short break. December is a great time for wandering markets, finding interesting gifts, and exploring its rich mix of old and new. It’s a change of scenery that feels substantial without demanding a long journey.

4. Lapland – Snow, silence and the home of Santa

On the other hand, for those who want to embrace winter fully, Lapland offers the opposite of a city break: vast landscapes, crisp air and serene whiteness stretching for miles. This is winter in its purest form, the kind you imagine in storybooks. The early sunsets and cosy cabins create an atmosphere perfect for slowing down, making it ideal for families and anyone who wants to sink into the quiet rhythm of snow-covered days. If there is a place where Santa should be, this is it.

5. Wellness staycation in Malta or Gozo – Rest without the travel

Sometimes the most effective break is the simplest one. A wellness staycation offers the chance to completely disconnect without dealing with airports or long itineraries. Booking a beautiful hotel, switching off your phone and allowing yourself to unwind can be a powerful reset after a long year. Malta and Gozo have increasingly strong wellness options, from spa retreats to boutique hideaways that make a short stay feel like a full reset.

6. Skiing – France for luxury, Bulgaria for budget-friendly slopes

If you prefer an active holiday, skiing remains a December favourite. France is the high-budget, high-reward choice, with world-renowned resorts, stunning alpine scenery and expansive slopes. It’s perfect for travellers who want the full mountain experience. Bulgaria, meanwhile, offers a more accessible, budget-friendly alternative without sacrificing the fun. Resorts like Bansko and Borovets are popular for a reason: reliable snow, lively après-ski and good value.

Whether you lean toward snow or sun, long adventures or simple rest, these destinations provide the chance to pause, recharge and start January feeling more grounded. A short Christmas break can set the tone for the entire year ahead.
