From 15th June to 30th September, demolition and excavation works will be prohibited in designated tourist areas across Malta and Gozo.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday (today), the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) announced that a comprehensive list of streets and localities has been identified where such works will not be permitted throughout the summer period.
“The enforcement of Subsidiary Legislation 623.08 (Third Schedule 1c) is one way of alleviating the inconvenience that construction sites cause, both to the tourism industry and to the growing number of Maltese families relocating to these areas. Demolition and excavation phases are particularly disruptive to neighbouring residences,” the statement reads.
The authorities have emphasised the importance of adhering to the regulations and have urged the public to report any breaches. Illegal works taking place during the restricted period can be reported to the BCA by calling 138 – a hotline that is available for both Malta and Gozo, during and after office hours.
Localities affected by this move include Gżira, Ħ’Attard, Mellieħa, and Swieqi.
As of this week, local politicians and activists are no longer able to run advertising on Facebook and Instagram
