The section of the Planning Authority’s 2026 Irrestawra Darek scheme covering the west of Malta was oversubscribed with applications just four days after it was launched.
The scheme provides financial assistance to owners, tenants, and NGOs to restore and maintain traditional façades and and scheduled heritage structures located within Urban Conservation Areas.
A total of €30 million was made available over six months, with funding split over six regions.
The scheme first opened in Reġjun Punent, with a total of €4.5 million allocated for restoration works in Mdina, Siġġiewi, Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Dingli, Rabat, Kirkop, Mqabba, Qrendi, Safi and Żurrieq.
Although the scheme was open until 18th February, it was fully subscribed and oversubscribed with applications within just four days.
“This remarkable level of interest clearly reflects both the success of the scheme and the strong demand for restoration and conservation support within the region,” the PA said.
“The Planning Authority sincerely thanks all applicants from Reġjun Punent for their enthusiasm and active participation, which has contributed to the positive outcome of this initiative.”
A new application window will open shortly for the next region in line.
The PA will issue a public announcement with the relevant dates and details once the next regional phase will be open to receive expressions of interest.
