Malta’s national pavilion at Japan’s Expo 2025 has been shortlisted as a finalist in three categories in the international World Expolympics competition.

The pavilion was designed by award-winning Maltese architecture firm Edwin Mintoff Architects, for the theme “Catch the Wave”.

The project is a “striking architectural landmark reflecting Malta’s unique identity, blending ancient heritage with future innovation.” The pavilion incorporates symbolic architectural references alongside futuristic multimedia experiences.

The architect’s studio said the announcement places the firm on the international stage alongside world-renowned designers, confirming Malta’s growing influence in the field of architecture.

“Catch the Wave” features a façade, which appears as limestone, that functions as a digital screen projecting a reel of Malta while curved designs were inspired by Malta’s prehistoric temples.

Inside, visitors are immersed in an audiovisual journey blending archetypal visuals, resonant soundscapes, and narratives spanning Malta’s ancient origins to its future aspirations.

The international World Expolympics is organised by the Experiential Design Authority, which celebrates the most innovative and inspiring global pavilion designs, awarding experiential architecture and storytelling.

Edwin Mintoff Architects, founded by Edwin Mintoff − one of the first Maltese architects to obtain a PhD in architecture and urban design − offers a full range of services including architectural and interior design, urban planning, environmental and civil engineering, structural design, quantity surveying and cost consultancy, with projects spanning both Malta and overseas.
