Around 250,000 residents, representing approximately half of the population, are due to receive a Government cheque in the coming days, Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced.
Speaking at a pre-budget public consultation session on Thursday evening, he did not specify who exactly would be receiving the refund, but said it would cost the Government around €17 million.
“As of tomorrow, you will find a tax refund cheque in your letterboxes for the fourth consecutive year.”
In one previous iteration of the scheme, people who earned under €60,000 yearly were given a refund ranging in value from between €40 and €68, depending on matrimonial status and family.
The Prime Minister compared the refunds to the COVID stimulus voucher scheme, claiming it means the country is injecting money into the economy.
“We put vouchers in the people’s hands, people spent the money and beyond that created added value on top of it.”
