Transport Malta has yet to decide on its preferred payment model for a proposed scheme that could see private businesses open their car parks to the public outside regular business hours.
The transport authority recently launched a preliminary market consultation to gauge the level of interest from businesses – including offices, supermarkets and industrial estates – in participating in such a scheme.
Businesses are being asked to identify parking spaces that could be opened to the public, outline when they would be available, specify any operational arrangements, and indicate their commercial expectations – such as rental models, revenue-sharing structures, or flat fees.
A Transport Malta spokesperson confirmed with BusinessNow.mt that no decisions have been taken at this stage, including on details such as whether the public will have to pay to use these car parks or whether they will be subsidised by the government.
“We are still in the initial stages of this consultation, and submissions are open until the 20th of April. At this point, no decisions have been made regarding payment models, hours, or fees,” the spokesperson said.
“The approach will depend on what the private operators propose, as their opening hours and operational practices differ. Once we review the submissions, we will be better able to determine the most suitable model for public access.”
