Alkagesta, the Malta-headquartered global commodity trading company, welcomed Malta's U16 Women's National Basketball Team to its Malta office after claiming the FIBA U16 Women's EuroBasket 2026 Division C title for the first time, secured with a perfect run through the competition culminating in a 76-51 victory in the final.
Alkagesta has been a sponsor of Malta's U16 Women's National Basketball Team, with the partnership forming part of the company's broader ESG commitments, which include supporting youth development, equal opportunities, and community-focused initiatives across Malta. The sponsorship was supported by Alkagesta's ESG Committee and HR & Administration Function.
The visit brought the newly crowned champions together with the Alkagesta Malta team for a conversation that went beyond the celebration. The discussion centred on what a winning culture actually requires – and the message that emerged was clear: focus on what you do, not on what others are doing. Healthy competition means looking inward, raising your own standards, and letting performance speak for itself.
Darren Axisa, Country Manager at Alkagesta Malta, commented: "Sponsoring Malta's U16 Women's National Basketball Team has been a natural extension of what we believe in as a company – investing in the development of young people and supporting initiatives that create opportunity. To see these athletes return to our office as European champions, having achieved something truly remarkable for Maltese basketball, is a reminder of what commitment and the right environment can produce. We congratulate the entire team and everyone who has supported them on this achievement."
2026 has been a year of significant commercial progress for Alkagesta. The company reported record first-half revenue of $3.5 billion and trading volumes of 4.9 million metric tonnes – a 53 per cent increase year on year – reflecting continued growth across its international trading platform. A defining milestone of the period was the company's entry into aviation fuel distribution through the NATO Central Europe Pipeline System, enabling Alkagesta to commence Jet A1 deliveries directly into the European aviation market at a time of constrained supply across the sector. The company also completed its first crude oil transactions during the period, including end-to-end delivery of approximately 1.07 million barrels to the Far East – marking a significant step in the broadening of its commodity portfolio.
Alongside this, Alkagesta continued to scale its presence in Asia through Alkagesta Asia Pte, its Singapore-based operationv, which reached monthly trading volumes of approximately 250,000 metric tonnes during the first half of the year – cementing Singapore's role as a central node within the company's global trading network and its growing footprint across Asian marine and energy markets.
The visit reflects Alkagesta's broader commitment to the Maltese community – one that sits alongside the company's continued commercial growth and its investment in initiatives that create opportunity both on and off the trading floor.
