Aquatic Resources Malta

Aquatic Resources Malta has announced a new initiative aimed at diversifying fish species in the local aquaculture sector. The project, co-financed by European funds, will focus on introducing the Greater Amberjack and the Red Porgy, strengthening the industry’s resilience and sustainability.

Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, highlighted the importance of this initiative, emphasising that it aligns with Malta’s vision of maintaining a sustainable and innovative aquaculture sector.

“This project shows our country’s continuous commitment to ensuring that the aquaculture industry remains competitive on a global scale. Through advanced research and efficient breeding methods, Malta is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable fish production,” she stated.

The project is being carried out at the San Lucian Tower laboratory, which is managed by Aquatic Resources Malta. According to the agency’s Chief Executive, Dr Frank Fabri, the initiative began with a call for interest targeting MFA (full-time fishing vessels) and MFB (part-time fishing vessels) fishermen.

Participants were invited to collect samples of the Greater Amberjack and the Red Porgy between September and October 2024. These specimens were placed in quarantine until they reached the appropriate size, after which they were transferred to specialised tanks for the first phase of the reproduction process.

Dr Fabri explained that the ultimate goal of the project is to successfully complete the reproduction cycle of these species in local aquaculture facilities. “A market study is also underway to identify and acquire specialised equipment that will enhance the capacity of laboratories and fish farming facilities. This investment is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the project,” he added.

This initiative marks a significant step in Malta’s efforts to advance aquaculture through research, innovation, and sustainable practices.
