The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, has announced that additional trips will be added to the schedule of the fast ferry service between the Malta and Gozo.
Following discussions with service operators, the Government will be investing €1.3 million to enhance the frequency of the trips between Valletta and Mġarr.
As a result, on Tuesday 1st October the current trip schedule will be extended year-round, eliminating the need for seasonal schedule adjustments.
In its first operating year, approximately 365,000 passengers made use of the fast ferry service. In 2023, the number increased to 693,000 passengers and during the first six months of 2024 409,000 passengers crossed between Malta and Gozo.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett expressed his belief that sea transport “is not utilised enough on the islands.”
On their part, the operators of Gozo Highspeed LTD noted that the company had received a positive response and “are certain that this initiative will have an even more efficient service for the clients.”
In 2023, the two firms operating the fast ferry services, Virtu Ferries and Gozo Fast Ferry merged operations to operate under the common brand, Gozo Highspeed.
