Bloom, a France-based marine environmental NGO, has accused top-ranking EU officials – including European Parliament President Roberta Metsola – of working with the United States to water down the European Green Deal.
In a report published in coordination with media outlets Der Spiegel and Aftonbladet, Bloom heavily criticised the EU’s recent Omnibus I package, which aims to make European businesses more competitive by lowering environmental regulations.
As a result of this package, only EU companies that employ over 1,000 employees and with an annual turnover of over €450 million will have to carry out social and environmental reporting.
Only companies with over 5,000 employees and €1.5 billion in turnover will have to carry out due diligence on reducing their negative impact on people and the planet.
Bloom pointed the finger at Swedish MEP Jörgen Warborn (EPP), who served as rapporteur for the package, accusing him of “betraying the higher interests of the EU and turning our democracies into vassals of the fascist international agenda openly desired by Donald Trump”.

They called out Mr Warborn for regularly meeting with US lobbyists while working on the file and accused him of acting as a “Trojan horse for American interests”.
Bloom also claimed that US advisory firm Teneo, acting on behalf of American industry players had come up with the plan of an alliance between the EU right and far-right to dismantle European CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive).
“He adopted the strategy of the Trump administration and the fossil fuel industry (ExxonMobil, Chevron, Koch, TotalEnergies, Dow Chemical, JP Morgan) to torpedo corporate due diligence measures that would have forced multinationals to be held accountable in court for the human and environmental impacts of their entire value chain, and to align their strategy with the Paris Agreement objectives through the implementation of ‘climate transition plans’,” the report states.
Besides Mr Warborn, the NGO also pointed the finger at Dr Metsola, accusing her of telling the American Chamber of Commerce that she wants to torpedo the CSDDD “to please the American business community and the Trump administration”.
EPP President Manfred Weber and Vice-President Dolors Montserrart were also named.
Bloom called for deep structural changes within the EU, such as the creation of an independent enforcer of rules relating to the integrity of European officials, a ban on all closed-door meetings between MEPs and lobbyists, and a ban on oil and gas companies influencing European policies.
It also called for a ban on MEP rapporteurs and shadow rapporteurs holding meetings out of the EU outside of a cross-party delegation, and an extension of the EPP’s jurisdiction to criminal offences affecting the EU’s democratic interests.
