The Government of Malta has announced a renewed and expanded financial commitment to the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI), with funding extended through to 2028.
The announcement was made during a visit by Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett, who highlighted the Government’s continued support for maritime education and international cooperation.
This extension builds on the original agreement signed in 1988 and reflects Malta’s growing ambition to cement its position as a global maritime hub.

“By supporting this Institute, we are not only investing in Malta’s future, but we are also investing in the global maritime community,” said Minister Bonett during the visit.

The announcement comes in the wake of Malta Vision 2050, the Government’s long-term roadmap to futureproof the nation’s economy. The strategy places significant emphasis on the maritime sector and its transformation through education, digitalisation, and sustainability.
In line with this vision, Malta is expected to invest in upskilling the maritime workforce, integrating new digital tools, and ensuring alignment with environmental standards and modern operational systems. Vocational education and continuous professional development are highlighted as key pillars to support both local competitiveness and Malta’s attractiveness to international talent.

In addition, Vision 2050 underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices, including the adoption of cleaner fuels, energy-efficient port operations, and marine biodiversity protection – aligning Malta’s maritime activities with EU decarbonisation targets and international environmental standards.
