Lidl said it will closely monitor its ongoing overnight parking scheme in Qormi before deciding whether to extend it to other localities.
In collaboration with the Qormi local council, Lidl has opened the car park at its new supermarket to free public parking outside business hours.
The car park, which includes over 100 parking spaces, is accessible to the public between 8pm and 8am for an initial three-month trial.
“We will monitor the situation closely throughout the three-month period to comprehensively evaluate the overall impact of the trial,” a Lidl spokesperson told BusinessNow.mt.
Asked whether such a scheme could eventually be expanded to its other supermarkets, the spokesperson said Lidl will have to see how the Qormi initiative turns out before any future evaluations can be made.
Earlier this year, Transport Malta launched a preliminary market consultation to gauge the level of interest from businesses – including offices, supermarkets and industrial estates – in opening their car parks to the public outside regular business hours.
A TM spokesperson told BusinessNow in April that there was strong market interest in the idea and that the proposals will be assessed internally.
