Transport Malta’s proposed scheme that could see private businesses open their car parks to the public outside regular business hours has generated “strong market interest”.
A preliminary market consultation to gauge the level of interest from businesses – including offices, supermarkets and industrial estates – in participating in such a scheme concluded this week.
Businesses were asked to identify parking spaces that could be opened to the public, specify availabilities and operational arrangements and indicate their commercial expectations.
“We’ve seen strong market interest, with a number of stakeholders also submitting initial proposals,” a TM spokesperson tells BusinessNow.mt.
“This confirms there is a clear appetite for this type of scheme.”
Transport Malta will now review and assess these proposals in detail, ensuring they align with its wider mobility objectives, before moving to the next phase.
The Malta Development Association has welcomed the proposal as a “sensible and timely measure” which can help ease ongoing parking pressures in a number of localities without placing further strain on land resources.
