The Malta Development Association (MDA) welcomed Transport Malta’s proposed scheme that could see private businesses open their car parks to the public outside regular business hours.

“The Association believes this is a sensible and timely measure which can help ease ongoing parking pressures in a number of localities,” MDA said.

“Making better use of existing, and often underutilised, private parking spaces particularly during evenings and weekends offers a practical way of increasing availability without placing further strain on land resources.”

Transport Malta carried out a preliminary market consultation to gauge the level of interest from businesses – including offices, supermarkets and industrial estates – in participating in such a scheme.  The consultation period ended yesterday.

MDA pointed out that several private parking facilities remain unused for significant periods and said that allowing controlled public access to them can provide immediate and tangible benefits for residents and visitors alike.

“The Association also welcomes the decision to engage with stakeholders through a consultation process, as this will be key to ensuring that any eventual framework is workable in practice and takes into account the realities faced by operators,” it said.

“The MDA encourages interested parties to participate in the consultation and looks forward to the development of an effective scheme that contributes positively to mobility and accessibility.”
