Malta is actively discussing the possibility of establishing direct flights with China.

Christopher Cutajar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism recently had talks with China Eastern Airline as part of a visit to the Asian country.

He said that the Maltese delegation proposed the establishment of a direct flight between Shanghai and Malta, which was received positively.

“There appear to be good prospects to keep working on this project in the coming months,” he said.

In another meeting with China’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Hua Chunying, the Maltese and Chinese delegations discussed ways to improve connectivity between the two countries by air and sea.

And in a separate economic and trade cooperation meeting in Beijing, the Chinese Commerce Ministry informed the Maltese delegation that China wants to strengthen maritime ties and strategic alignment with Malta.

Talks with China come as Malta prepares to further expand its long-haul connectivity, with Delta Air Lines direct flights to New York set to begin in June.
