Government workers who were on duty during the violent storm that battered Malta earlier this week are set to receive a special allowance in recognition of their service.

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the allowance early on Friday (today), saying that many workers went “above and beyond the call of duty.”

He mentioned the Civil Protection Department, the Malta Police Force and other law enforcement units, along with those who sprung into action after the immediate emergency was over, such as the Cleansing Department and the Public Works Departments.

The violence of Storm Harry, he said, required “great efforts” from such workers.

“I want to send a strong message of recognition for that dedication, so we have approved a special allowance as a sign of appreciation.”

He added that further information about the workings will be released in due course.
