Malta could soon secure a direct air link with the United States, as Delta Air Lines has shortlisted the island in a customer poll to decide its next Mediterranean destination.

Between 25th and 29th August, members of Delta’s SkyMiles loyalty programme are being invited to vote in what the carrier has branded a “Route Race”, choosing between Malta, Ibiza, and Sardinia. The winning destination will be added to the airline’s schedule in 2026, with results set to be revealed in late September.

If successful, the move would mark a significant development for Malta’s tourism and business connectivity. At present, travellers between the US and Malta rely on stopovers in major European hubs such as London, Frankfurt, or Paris.

Delta Air Lines is one of the largest carriers in the United States, operating more than 4,000 flights per day to 275 destinations in 50 countries.

A Delta service would not only open new opportunities for inbound visitors from the US but also strengthen Malta’s positioning as a Mediterranean hub.

Whether Malta can edge out its rivals in the vote remains to be seen, but industry observers will be watching closely, as the outcome could reshape the island’s long-haul travel offering in the coming years.
