Malta International Airport (MIA) welcomed more than one million passengers in June for the second consecutive year, handling 1,079,703 passengers during the month, a 16.9 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025.
The strong performance capped off a robust first half of 2026, during which the airport expanded its route network with the launch of two strategically important connections.
On 3rd June, Norwegian Airlines inaugurated a new direct service between Malta and Billund in Denmark. Five days later, Malta marked another milestone with the arrival of the first-ever direct flight between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Malta operated by a United States carrier, following Delta Air Lines' launch of its seasonal route.
To accommodate growing demand, airlines increased seat capacity by 20.6 per cent year-on-year. However, the seat load factor declined by 2.7 percentage points to 84.2 per cent, indicating that capacity growth outpaced passenger growth during the month.
The United Kingdom retained its position as Malta's largest aviation market, accounting for 21.2 per cent of total traffic. Passenger numbers to and from the UK rose by 14.6 per cent compared to June 2025.
Italy remained the airport's second-largest market, recording growth of 8.5 per cent, while Poland continued to stand out with a 52.4 per cent surge in passenger traffic. Germany and Spain completed the top five markets, registering increases of 4.7 per cent and 15.3 per cent respectively.
