In a significant move towards sustainability and social justice, Malta has launched the ‘Żomm Tarmix’ initiative, aimed at reducing food waste while supporting those in need.
The project, built on a digital platform (tarmix.gov.mt), will connect businesses willing to donate food nearing its expiry date with voluntary organisations that can distribute it to those in need. The initiative not only enhances efficiency and transparency but also fosters a circular economy in Malta. Additionally, participating businesses will be eligible for tax incentives, encouraging more companies to contribute.
During his address, Dr Abela highlighted the growing importance of food supply, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and global geopolitical challenges. Beyond reducing food waste, the initiative also aims to extend food distribution efforts, including the sale of food items at reduced prices.
The Prime Minister praised businesses that prioritise social responsibility over mere profit-making, stating that the scheme rewards those who recognise their role in society beyond financial success.
