Malta International Airport (MIA) experienced a strong performance in February 2025, welcoming a total of 560,553 passengers. This figure represents an impressive 18.2 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2024. The growth was closely aligned with a 22.8 per cent rise in aircraft movements, demonstrating a continued upward trend in air travel to and from Malta.
Passenger traffic peaked toward the end of the month, with 29th February marking the busiest day. On this day alone, 26,119 travellers passed through MIA on 167 flights, reflecting the increasing demand for air travel.
Airlines responded to this demand by increasing seat capacity by 21.1 per cent, bringing the total number of available seats to 696,519. Meanwhile, the seat load factor, which measures seat occupancy rates, remained strong at an average of 80.5 per cent. This indicates that a significant proportion of available seats were occupied, highlighting the continued appeal of Malta as a travel destination.
Italy remained Malta International Airport’s leading market, accounting for 19.2 per cent of total passenger traffic. The United Kingdom followed closely behind, representing 18.3 per cent of the market share. The UK also continued to demonstrate strong performance, recording an 18 per cent increase in passengers compared to February 2024.
One of the standout performers for the month was the Polish market, which saw remarkable growth of 55.9 per cent. Poland accounted for 11.4 per cent of February’s total passenger traffic, a surge likely driven by the increasing number of direct connections. Ryanair and Wizz Air currently offer flights from Malta International Airport to eight different Polish destinations, supporting the market’s expansion.
Germany and Spain rounded out the top five markets, with 7.1 per cent and 6.2 per cent of passenger traffic, respectively.
The sustained rise in passenger numbers and the expansion of direct flight connections suggest a positive outlook for the coming months.
