Malta fishing

Malta has achieved a strong ranking in the 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) for its fishing sector, securing second place among countries in the Global West. The ranking highlights Malta’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility in its fisheries industry.

Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, welcomed the achievement, stating that it reflects the country’s progress in sustainable fishing practices.

“This result shows the progress being made in various environmental areas, especially when it comes to the sustainability of fishing,” Ms Bugeja Said remarked. She explained that the EPI assesses countries based on factors such as environmental health, biodiversity, climate policies, and fishing sustainability, making Malta’s ranking a significant milestone.

The Parliamentary Secretary emphasised that Malta’s sustainable fisheries management and conservation of fish stocks are delivering positive results. She attributed the success to effective government policies that prioritise environmental protection while supporting economic development.

Malta continues to advance and improve its performance in various environmental areas, and these results confirm the country’s efforts to protecting its seas, biodiversity, and economy.

Fishing and aquaculture play a crucial role in Malta’s coastal communities and the broader maritime industry. Moving forward, the government aims to continue strengthening sustainable policies to maintain Malta’s high environmental standards while supporting the livelihoods of those dependent on the sector.

This latest ranking positions Malta as a leader in sustainable fishing and underscores its commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.
