Maltese consumers’ appetite for data seems to be insatiable, with the amount of mobile internet used increasing steadily quarter after quarter.

A report by the Malta Communications Authority, analysing trends between 2018 and 2022, shows that Malta only used up 1.3 million MBs in mobile data in the first quarter of 2018.

However, this had increased to 23.5 million MBs in the last quarter of 2022- over 18 times as much.

This increase has offset a decrease in the number of SMS and MMS being sent, as new communication applications become more commonly used.

The same report noted that around 95 per cent of all households in Malta have an active internet connection, with four out of every five respondents having an ultra-fast connection which supports download speeds of 100Mbps or more

Malta’s very high rate of connectivity allowed it to maintain its rank on the EU’s Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) for 2022, where it ranked 6th, performing above the EU average across the four main areas of the index.
