Works to expand Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency Department and on the Acute Mental Health Hospital will begin in August, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg said.
He was replying to a question in Parliament posed by PN MP Ian Vassallo.
Works, Minister Borg said, are expected to take 3 years to complete. Through the project, the number of cubicles in the emergency department will rise from 32 to 70 he said, adding that the number of paediatric emergency cubicles will also increase.
The tender for the expansion of the emergency department and overlying acute mental health facility had been issued in 2024, estimating works costing €80 million. But only one consortium, CE-BB Projects, filed a bid, but for €135 million. The bid was rejected, and the bidder appealed.
A negotiated procedure with the consortium brought the price down to €120 million.
Meanwhile, another tender related to the project is currently being evaluated.
The services tender is for the project management and technical supervisory services for the new acute mental health wards and extension of emergency department. This includes, among other things, project-supervision services and construction site supervision services, among other things. It is valued at €5.9 million.
