The Malta Communications Authority (MCA) and the Office for Consumer Affairs within the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation on consumer protection, particularly in the communications and digital sectors.

The agreement sets out a formal framework for the two authorities to share information, coordinate enforcement, and jointly address issues affecting consumers. This includes clearer procedures for handling complaints, monitoring market practices, and launching awareness initiatives.

Under the MoU, the MCA and MCCAA will also work together to carry out coordinated checks on e-commerce platforms and online services, as well as exchange data to identify practices that may harm consumer interests.

For the MCCAA, Executive Chairperson Carmen Ciantar underlined the role of trust in consumer protection, saying that joint action between institutions ensures greater authority when addressing issues. Director General Grace Stivala added that the MoU would help strengthen coordinated enforcement and improve public awareness.

Both authorities emphasised that the collaboration is intended to prevent duplication of effort and deliver more effective oversight of the communications and digital markets.
