Academy Award-winning filmmaker and actor Mel Gibson is reportedly developing a new limited TV series based on the Great Siege of Malta, an iconic battle that took place in 1565.
According to a recent report by MovieWeb, the project is still in its early stages, but Mr Gibson has shown a keen interest in the siege, saying “it’s a pretty crazy, great story.”
This new venture would mark another historical epic in Mr Gibson’s portfolio, following films like Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ.
When asked what role would Mr Gibson take, he said, “I’d like to be in it, but I don’t know if I’ll have the time, you know? But I certainly want to be like a producer of it, and I’ve worked with a very talented writer on the script, so it’s going to be good for somebody.”
Mel Gibson is no stranger to historical drama, having directed and starred in films that revolve around key events and figures in history. His 1995 film Braveheart, about Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace, won him five Academy Awards.
This new series on the Great Siege of Malta seems to be a natural progression for Mr Gibson, whose projects often explore themes of courage, faith, and perseverance.
The historical context
The Great Siege of Malta holds a prominent place in our history.
In 1565, the Ottoman Empire, under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, sought to expand its influence by capturing the strategic island of Malta. The small island was defended by the Knights of St John, led by Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, and the siege became one of the most significant military engagements of its time.
Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Knights and the Maltese population held off the invaders for several months, securing a monumental victory for the Maltese.
Local impact
The project is expected to bring significant attention to the country and potentially boost its reputation as a destination for major film productions. Malta, already known for its scenic beauty and historical landmarks, has been featured in several international blockbusters, including Gladiator, Troy, and Game of Thrones.
It is also worth noting that Malta offers attractive tax incentives to foreign film productions, which make the island an appealing location for the filming of this series.
