Frequent visitors to Gozo over the last few years must have surely noted an increased presence of vehicles on the island, and as a result, an increased lack of parking spaces. This was the effect of easier accessibility and several other initiatives that attracted people to Gozo.

However, increased stress on the environment, both natural as well as infrastructural, is pushing the case for the development of a comprehensive mobility strategy that meets the needs of residents and visitors.

The Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) has taken a leading role in launching initiatives that toward this vision, aiming to enhance transportation infrastructure in line with the regional development strategy for the island.

One of the most significant initiatives put forth by the GRDA focuses on the promotion of sustainable transportation options, centred around the development of a green park and an underground parking that will serve as a central hub for many activities.

This green space is envisioned to not only enhance the appeal of Victoria but also promote outdoor leisure activities, helping to foster a sense of community and wellbeing among residents.

Part of this project is the creation of two underground parking facilities – situated between Villa Rundle and bus terminus, and the other at Pjazza l-Assedju t’Għawdex. These facilities aim to address the growing issue of congestion and limited parking spaces in urban areas.

By relocating over 600 parking spaces underground, Gozo can free up valuable surface land for greener spaces and pedestrian areas, thus supporting the objectives of increased space for the community.

This approach is expected not only to enhance the area in and around Victoria but also encourage the use of public transport and alternative mobility options, as visitors and residents alike will have easier access to transportation hubs given that these are only a few metres away from the main bus terminus in Victoria.

Another key initiative being undertaken by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning is the development of park and ride facilities at Ta’ Xħajma in Xewkija. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly in the Mġarr Harbour area.

The Ta’ Xħajma Park and Ride is in the final stages of its completion, so much so that it is already providing parking spaces for commuters and offering a shuttle service to and from Mġarr Harbour. All of this is free of charge for users and, additionally, utilises fully electric buses.

To improve further mobility in Gozo, studies are ongoing to extend this shuttle service to other parts of Gozo, especially to Victoria. This will encourage commuters to leave their cars at the park and ride and use public transport, walking or cycling to get to Victoria, by establishing pedestrian-friendly pathways and dedicated bike lanes.

By investing in these infrastructure developments, Gozo not only enhances mobility but also aims to reduce carbon emissions, ultimately contributing to a healthier environment.

The emphasis on sustainable transport aligns with global trends that promote eco-friendly mobility solutions as a response to urbanisation and climate change.
