Yorgen Fenech, who stands accused of being a mastermind behind the car bombing that tragically killed journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia on 16th October 2017, has been granted bail after five years in custody.
The Times of Malta confirms that Madam Justice Edwina Grima issued a bail decree at a hearing on Friday morning (today).
Local media report that Mr Fenech must pay a deposit of €80,000 and a €120,000 personal guarantee. Further, his aunt, Moira Fenech, will serve as his guarantor, using her Tumas company shares of 15.45 per cent as collateral.
Mr Fenech has been ordered by the court not to go within 50 metres of the coast or airport, he must sign a bail book at the St Julian’s police station every day and must also stay indoors between 5pm and 11am.
Reports indicate that his passport and ID documents are being held by the court.
Mr Fenech is an heir to the Tumas Group empire, one of Malta’s largest and most prominent business conglomerates operating in several key sectors. Some notable business ventures owned by the group include Hilton Malta, Portomaso Marina and Business Tower, Casino Portomaso and The Oracle Casino.
