During his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Minister Robert Abela held a series of diplomatic and business meetings, including discussions with senior representatives from Amazon.

The talks were held at the Maltese Embassy in New York, with Amazon Vice President Susan Pointer and Amazon Web Services (AWS) Director Franco Spicciariello meeting with Dr Abela and members of his delegation.

According to a Government statement, Amazon expressed interest in strengthening its engagement with Malta, particularly through its cloud division AWS. The company noted that it already serves several Maltese clients and pointed to the island’s progress in digital innovation. Amazon also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in areas such as start-up support and digital skills development, and said that Malta’s long-term “Vision 2050” strategy aligned with its own priorities.

Dr Abela remarked that international firms are showing greater interest in Malta’s business and technology ecosystem, describing the 2050 framework as an important factor in attracting investment.

Beyond business discussions, the Prime Minister also took part in several UN-led events during the week. At a summit on building a “sustainable, inclusive and resilient global economy”, he called for greater accessibility in lending to developing countries, saying such assistance should have a tangible impact on people’s daily lives.
