Transport Malta has announced the launch of a financial incentive scheme for the purchase of bicycles, conversion of bicycles to pedelecs, and installation of bicycle racks, bicycle repair stations and related facilities.
Malta’s businesses are now eligible for significant financial assistance when taking action to increase the use of bicycles, with a new incentive scheme providing 70 per cent of the cost of infrastructural upgrades, such as bike racks and bicycle repair stations.
Such facilities must be available for public use without charge.
Launched by Transport Malta, the incentive scheme also provides for the conversion of bicycles into battery-assisted pedelecs. Businesses, as well as private individuals, voluntary organisations and local councils, are eligible for a €400 grant for each converted bicycle.
Another sub-scheme relates to the purchase of bicycles for hire, with businesses eligible to receive 15.25 per cent of the selling price, up to €85, for up to 50 bikes.
Transport Malta said that the incentive serves to encourage the modal shift from cars to bicycles and active mobility, in line with the Government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
