Businesses will still be empowered to enforce their own mask rules after 2nd May, Chris Fearne confirms

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne on Friday confirmed that after 2nd May, when the mandatory use of masks indoors in public spaces and private businesses will be lifted, apart from some exceptions, businesses will still be empowered to set their own mask rules.

At a press conference, he was asked whether businesses, such as shops, can require customers to wear masks after 2nd May, when the legal requirement will be removed.

Minsiter Fearne said that nobody can stop them, and that if a customer feels aggrieved because they are being made to wear a mask when the state no longer requires it, they can seek their own legal remedy, “even though there will be no legal basis to do this,” he said.

“As long as the rules imposed are greater than the minimum set by the state, there will be no challenge or intervention by the health authorities,” he added.
