The Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Malta is driving forward two exciting collaborations aimed at using AI and computer vision to enhance urban planning and maintenance for societal benefit.
According to a recent update from Dylan Seychell, AI Specialist, on LinkedIn, these projects, EMBAT and AICOM, showcase the power of partnerships between academia, government, and industry to create smarter, more efficient public services.
Speaking to Business Now, Mr Seychell revealed that it all started six months ago when the Aerial Waste Identification and Geolocation System (AWIGS) project was approved for funding by Xjenza Malta. This initiative, led by the Department of AI at the University of Malta, combines advanced AI, computer vision, and drone technology to modernise litter detection and cleanup efforts in rural areas, aiming to enhance environmental cleanliness and sustainability. In collaboration with the Cleansing and Maintenance Division in the Ministry for Tourism’, AWIGS will deliver accurate location data to empower cleanup crews to work more efficiently and effectively.
”This project that we’re launching now will use AI to detect garbage bags, litter, potholes, and maintenance-related issues using imagery from vehicles. This will be built with ethics and privacy by design.”
In the EMBAT project, the University of Malta is teaming up with Malta’s Planning Authority to revolutionise urban mapping through artificial intelligence. Funded by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), this project will use computer vision and deep learning to detect and analyse changes in aerial and satellite imagery.
By strengthening existing methods for monitoring urban development, EMBAT aims to provide more accurate and timely data on Malta’s evolving landscape, supporting better planning and decision-making processes.
The AICOM project, in collaboration with the Cleansing & Maintenance Division, focuses on optimising urban maintenance operations. Using AI-driven solutions, AICOM will improve public services like litter detection and street maintenance while maintaining strong ethical standards and privacy safeguards. This partnership seeks to make urban environments cleaner and more efficient by leveraging advanced technology for real-time monitoring and response.
Both initiatives reflect the University of Malta’s commitment to harnessing AI for social good, strengthening public infrastructure, and enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
