Enemalta issues call for tender for new Naxxar distribution centre, fast-tracks 70km cable-laying plan

On Thursday (today), Enemalta announced that it has issued a call for tender for its new distribution centrein Naxxar to strengthen electricity distribution network and improve services rendered in the area.

In a joint statement, Infrastructure Malta, Transport Malta and Enemalta explained upcoming and current work initiatives to strengthen the system of electrical distributions. This includes two new distribution centres in Naxxar and in Siggiewi.

“As part of the upcoming 2024 investments, Enemalta will publish a call for tender for the 60-megawatt implant, so that Enemalta has the additional capacity of a temporary reserve. This temporary implant will increase its reserve in cases of emergency, when other sources are not available,” Enemalta explained.

During these past few months, Enemalta continued to allocate more resources as part of its six-year plan to strengthen its generation and distribution infrastructure.

At the same time, Enemalta joined forces with Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta to strengthen the network with 70km cables of 11 kilovolt underground cables

In recent months, Enemalta explained that it has continued its works in enhancing the electricity distribution systems at different levels, especially those hit worst during the major power outages experienced last summer.

During its sweltering hot summer days, Malta saw days-long of power cuts across the islands, effecting lots of households and businesses.

Between 2022 and 2023, Enemalta commissioned 80 new substations and completed 66 substation upgrades. Works are expected to continue in 2024 with plans of 45 new substations and others upgraded. Additionally, extension works have continued in the three distribution centres in Marsacala, Imriehel and Tarxien.

On the other hand, Jeanette Axisa, Chief Officer within the Office of Transport Malta’s CEO, explained that Transport Malta officials will be present in the communities through its officials, both Field Officers and Enforcement Officers.

“We will also provide diversions for public transport so that they stay in their respective zones as much as possible. The aim is to find a balance between the needs of the localities along with the those of schools and the communities in general,” Ms Axisa said.
