The Identità agency is aiming to invest in more advanced technologies and systems that reduce bureaucracy, simplify procedures and shorten waiting times in the coming years, the Government said in a statement.
These improvements, it said, must be achieved without compromising identity security, personal data protection, or the safeguards needed to prevent fraud.
Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment Jonathan Attard chaired a consultation meeting with civil society representatives organised by the Identità Agency. The aim of the meeting was for the agency to present and discuss the key pillars of its strategy for the 2027-2032 period. The agency is responsible for issuing Malta’s e-ID cards, passports, visas and residence documents, among other things.
"As the current strategy approaches its conclusion, we have an opportunity to build on the progress achieved, identify areas for improvement and prepare the agency for the challenges that lie ahead,” Minister Attard said. He stressed that the new strategy should establish a clear direction, identify key priorities and guide the agency’s work as it continues to enhance its services.
The Minister also emphasised the importance of keeping digitalisation and investment in artificial intelligence integral to the agency’s processes.
“Our aim should be to provide simpler, more efficient and secure services that genuinely respond to people’s needs,” the Minister said.
Meanwhile, Identità Chairperson Marlene Mizzi said that the agency’s main objectives include increasing efficiency, reducing bureaucracy, and further strengthening its services, while continuing to safeguard the country’s interests and security.
Identità Chief Executive Officer Edric Zahra noted that the agency recognises the need to maintain ongoing communication with all those who are directly or indirectly connected to its operations to continue developing and improving its services.
The Chief Executive Officer presented the agency’s vision and proposed strategic pillars for the 2027-2032 period. He also outlined the direction Identità intends to pursue.
