A new research project in smart manufacturing has been launched in Malta, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of the local industrial sector, create new jobs, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

The initiative, announced by Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti at Seifert Systems Ltd in Ħal Far, is part of a broader program that includes 10 innovative research projects. The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with the private sector and the University of Malta.

Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the significance of this project, stating, “This project is not just about technology; it’s about giving our industry the tools and skills needed to compete on a global level. Smart manufacturing is not only bringing economic opportunities, but it is also helping to create quality jobs for Maltese workers and graduates.”

The project focuses on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation into production processes. These advancements will enable local companies to expand their operations and compete internationally. Additionally, the initiative will provide specialised training to equip workers with the skills necessary for this rapidly evolving sector.

Engineer Emanuel Francalanza from the University of Malta, who is leading the project, emphasised its transformative impact: “Smart manufacturing is not only reshaping the industry but also creating opportunities for a more sustainable and competitive economy. This project is a crucial step toward a future where technology and innovation drive economic development.”

Philip Seifert, General Manager of Seifert Systems, also praised Malta’s business environment: “Malta is an ideal location for investment, offering a strategic position, modern infrastructure, and strong government support. Seifert Systems is a testament to how Malta fosters growth and innovation.”

This initiative marks another milestone in Malta’s commitment to innovation, reinforcing collaboration between the government, private industry, and academia. Parliamentary Secretary Azzopardi Tanti concluded, “Investing in smart manufacturing is about more than economic success; it’s about building a sustainable future for generations to come.”
