The Malta Development Association said that construction workers who work outdoors in extreme heat conditions deserve more protection.
MDA President Michael Stivala spoke out at a high-level activity following an intense heatwave in which temperatures peaked above 40°C.
He praised contractors who are leading by example in safeguarding their workers from extreme heat but said they must all adopt high standards.
Mr Stivala also announced that a national building code for the construction industry is set to be launched in the coming months after decades of discussion.
He said it will lead to higher standards, improved safety and more professionalism.
“It will become an important reference point for the future of the industry, strengthen public trust, and contribute to improving Malta's built environment,” he said.
In his speech, Mr Stivala also called for the reduction of excess bureaucracy and stressed the importance of collaboration between the Government and industry to reach a solution to the challenge of construction waste dumping.
Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Alex Borg, and Planning Minister Jonathan Attard were all present at the activity.
