Melita Italia, a branch of the Maltese telecoms company Melita, has been acquired by Enel Energia, a major Italian energy company, according to reports by MondoMobile.Web.

A Melita Italia customer shared an email they received from Melita on a Italian public forum, stating that the company has been acquired by Enel Energia. Since then however, there has been no official communication by either Melita or Enel Energia.

This can also be confirmed by Melita.it’s website, which has a banner at the bottom of the website, saying that Enel Energia is the sole shareholder of the website.

The email received by the Melita Italia customer

Melita had expanded to Italy in February 2019, through a subsidiary called Melita Italia Srl. The company planned to use Italy’s Open Fiber wholesale network to initially provide services in Catania, Palermo, Milan, and Naples, and planned to expand further.

In December 2019, Melita partnered with the multinational company Enel Energia, one of Italy’s oldest and largest energy companies with over 12 million customers. The goal was to offer to offer high speed fibre internet services across Italy, allowing the energy company’s customers to add Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) internet services to their existing energy package.
