Highly popular messaging service WhatsApp was down across Malta, and in several countries around the world earlier this morning.

Between 9.30am and 10.30am, thousands of reports flooded the internet to report that the highly popular messaging service was inaccessible.

A look at Downdetector.com, a commonly used website showing the functionality of popular web services, showed that users around the world were unable to connect to WhatsApp.

Indeed, when opening the application, the application failed to connect to the server.

Users were able to view old conversations, however were prevented from sending or receiving any new messages.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging platforms in Malta and around the world.
