Ponte finally given green light for fast ferry to Sicily… but only temporarily

Ponte Ferries has been granted a temporary permit by the Augusta port authority to operate a fast ferry service from Malta to the Sicilian coastal town

The service between Valletta and Augusta will initially operate five trips a week. A return trip for a driver and private vehicle will cost under €100, while any accompanying adults can travel one way at €9.99. Children aged 13 and under, as well as pets travel for free, while cyclists can take up their bicycle at no extra charge.

There will also be special rates for light cargo.

“We’re very appreciative of our clients’ patience and understanding during the past weeks and thank all the parties involved for their continuous support and cooperation to give Ponte Ferries the green light to set sail,” a company spokesperson said.

The spokesman was referring to the difficulties and delays Ponte has had in obtaining a permit to operate. Last August, a last-minute legal challenge by an unnamed competitor forced the company – a joint venture between Magro Brothers Investments Ltd and Merill Invest Ltd – to postpone the inauguration of its service.
