Hhousehold energy consumption for cooling in Malta rose substantially over recent years.

Malta’s long and hot summers mean many quickly turn to air conditioners to cool off during hot days.

In 2018, 440,442 terajoules (TJ) was used by households in Malta for cooling, and this rose by 73 per cent to 762,066 TJ in 2024

In terms of the EU as a whole, in 2018, EU households used 40.5 thousand TJ for space cooling, reaching 80.4 thousand terajoules (TJ) in 2024.

Among EU countries, Italy, Spain and Greece registered the highest total energy use for space cooling, with 26.3 thousand TJ, 14.3 thousand TJ and 11.9 thousand TJ, respectively.

However, Cyprus and Malta have by far the highest shares of energy used for space cooling in final household consumption, at 16.0 per cent and 15.0 per cent.
