In January, the total tourist spend per night (expenditure) on the islands surpassed €109.9 million, reflecting an increase of 10.9 per cent when compared to January 2023.

Figures published by the National Statistics Office (NSO) reveal that the average spend per night was estimated at €108.9.

On the other hand, figures show that the average spend per person (expenditure per capita) stood at €638.9, an €88.90 decrease from 2023 figures (€727.8) and a €147 difference from 2022 figures (€785.9).

The expenditure refers to the money spent during travels and therefore includes expenses on accommodation, food and drinks, transportation, attractions, shopping, and entertainment among others.

Overall, Malta registered a total of 172,021 tourists, marking an increase of 26.3 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2023. Of these, 8,030 were traveling for business purposes.

The majority (40.1 per cent) of the visiting tourists belonged to the 25-44 age group, followed by the 45-64 bracket (30.4 per cent).

As commonly noted in other months, Italian, British and Polish residents made up 46 per cent of total tourists visiting the islands.

NSO also registered 61,493 individuals that have visited Gozo and Comino, equating to 35.7 per cent of total tourist that visited during the month of January. These figures also include same-day and overnight visitors.

Notably, while tourism figures are generally on the rise, the total nights spent on the islands decreased by 2.1 per cent when compared to January 2023.

Overall, nights totalled to one million with the average length of stay of total inbound tourists standing at 5.9 nights. 79.4 per cent of whom have spent their holiday in rented accommodation establishments.
