malta tourist

Malta’s tourism industry continues to thrive as inbound tourists spent an impressive €480.5 million during August 2024, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO).

This represents a notable boost to the local economy, with tourism remaining a vital pillar supporting various sectors such as hospitality, retail, and entertainment.

The total expenditure by tourists was driven by a significant increase in visitor numbers and a higher average spend per trip.

Over 409,536 visitors flocked to the Maltese Islands in August alone, marking a 15.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. This continued growth is testament to Malta’s strong appeal as a destination for both leisure and business travellers.

Tourists visiting Malta for longer periods contributed significantly to this financial injection, with those staying for seven nights or more spending the most. This suggests that Malta continues to attract not just day-trippers but also longer-term visitors who spend more on accommodation, dining, and leisure activities.

The growing role of European tourists

European tourists made up the majority of visitors, with the United Kingdom, Italy, and France being the largest source markets. The number of British tourists showed strong growth, bolstered by the return of favourable flight connections and an appetite for Mediterranean getaways.

The increased influx of tourists from these countries is a clear indicator that Malta remains a highly sought-after destination within the European travel landscape.

The influx of tourists from Europe also ties in with Malta’s broader tourism strategy, which aims to continue promoting the islands as a prime destination within the region.
