More than 29,000 people registered and started the ‘AI for Everyone’ national online literacy programme on Artificial Intelligence in the seven weeks of its operation, Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said, with just over half the number completing it.

The minister provided information about the programme in response to a question asked in Parliament by Labour Party MP Romilda Zarb.

During the ‘AI for Everyone’ launch in May, the Government had said that the primary objective of this initiative is to equip the public with a comprehensive understanding of AI, empowering them to utilise these technologies confidently, securely, and responsibly. Developed by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) in partnership with the University of Malta, this course is available online at no cost.

Together with the initiative, the Government had announced an international partnership with OpenAI and Microsoft, and that individuals who complete the approximately two-hour course will receive a free one-year subscription to either ChatGPT Plus or Microsoft 365 Personal Copilot.

In total, the minister said, 15,839 completed the three courses in the programme and received a one year subscription to one of the AI tools.

The minister said that the programme consists of three courses focusing on the fundamental elements of AI, AI for everyday life, and AI for learning. “Anyone who completes these courses and answers the related questions will achieve a level of understanding that enables the safe use of AI.” He added that those who reach this level will receive a certificate confirming that the courses were complete.

Regarding the initiative, the minister described the progress as positive.
