In March 2025, approximately 289,030 tourists visited Malta – a 19.7 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2024. Out of the total, 12,116 tourists visited for business purposes, accounting for approximately 4.2 per cent of all arrivals
The data was published in a report by the National Statistics Office, which analysed tourism trends for that month.
These are the key insights for March 2025:
- Age groups: The largest share of tourists who visited Malta – 37.4 per cent –were aged between 25 and 44, followed by those aged 45 to 64, who made up 33.9 per cent.
- Frequency: 231,448 tourists visited Malta for the first time, while 57,581 were repeat visitors – a noticeable increase from March 2023, when repeat tourists numbered 45,001 and first-time visitors totalled 129,894.
- Countries of origin: Residents of the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland accounted for 44.5 per cent of all inbound tourists.
- Total nights: Compared to March 2024, the total number of nights spent in Malta rose by 14.8 per cent, surpassing 1.6 million. The average length of stay for inbound tourists was 5.6 nights.
- Expenditure: Total tourist expenditure nearly reached €219.1 million in March 2025, marking a 19.5 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2024. The average expenditure per night was estimated at €136.
- Accommodation: The vast majority of guest nights, 270,859 or 91.8 per cent, were spent in rented accommodation establishments. Only 18,170 or 6.3 per cent stayed in non-rented accommodation.
The report also examined tourism trends for the period between January and March 2025. Key highlights include:
- Number of tourists: For the first three months of 2025, inbound tourists totaled 693,492, an 18.9 per cent increase when compared to the same period in 2024.
- Total nights: The total number of nights spent by inbound tourists rose by 15.9 per cent, nearing the 4 million mark.
- Expenditure: Tourist spending for the first quarter of 2025 was estimated at €508.5 million, a 24.6 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Per capita expenditure also rose, reaching €733, up from €700 in the previous year.
- Gozo and Comino: A total of 332,627 tourists visited Gozo and Comino, whether for day trips or overnight stays, representing 48 per cent of all inbound tourists.
