Oļegs Černiševs, CTO of Malta-based fintech Blackcat, will lead an open online session on risk management for banks and fintech companies on Monday, 14th September.
The 90-minute webinar, organised by the Fintech Latvia Association as part of its Fintech Academy initiative, will run from 8.30am to 10am.
Dr Černiševs, who is also Founder and Head of the Latvian Risk Management Association (LRMA), will present a risk management framework designed to help financial institutions identify, measure and manage their exposure.
The session will examine 11 risk groups, alongside the three lines of defence model and four key actions that boards can take when managing risk.
Among the areas to be discussed are risk appetite, tolerance and limits; the distinction between inherent and residual risk; governance; threats and vulnerabilities; testing the effectiveness of controls; and the use of key risk indicators (KRIs).
Particular attention will also be given to situations where an institution's residual risk falls outside its established risk appetite and the decisions that should consequently fall to the board.
The webinar comes as financial institutions across the EU continue adapting their governance and risk management structures to the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), which became applicable in January 2025.
DORA establishes requirements around ICT risk management and operational resilience for financial entities, making the allocation of responsibilities and oversight of technology-related risks an increasingly important consideration for fintech businesses.
The session will explore who should own risk within a fintech and how firms can build an appropriate structure around that responsibility, particularly within smaller organisations where operational resilience responsibilities may be concentrated among a limited number of people.
An open Q&A will follow the presentation.
