The latest nationwide survey by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) paints an increasingly optimistic picture in monthly broadband spending, with a marked shift toward more budget-friendly plans, with three in four households now paying between €20 and €49.99 per month, compared to only half in 2022.
Meanwhile, the proportion of households spending over €50 has plummeted from 49 per cent in 2022 to just 13 per cent.
Furthermore, 12 per cent of households now spend less than €20 per month, a significant increase from just one per cent two years ago. According to the MCA, these improvements reflect growing competition among providers, who are offering faster plans at lower prices.
Digital inclusion and internet accessibility across Malta is also being improved, with 99 per cent of respondents saying tey have internet access in their homes – up from 95 per cent reported in 2022.
Consumers are also becoming more digitally aware. More than half of respondents, 57 per cent tested their broadband speed in 2025, up from just 44 per cent in 2022, suggesting growing interest in internet performance and transparency.
Another interesting finding is the adoption of over-the-top (OTT) services, such as video streaming and instant messaging. 99 per cent of respondents now use OTT platforms, up from 87 per cent in 2022.
Content streaming and chat applications remain the most popular online activities, with daily usage now widespread across all age groups.
Malta’s broadband market is also showing signs of maturity. Consumers are increasingly weighing pricing, download speeds, customer service and contract flexibility when selecting a broadband package. This shift suggests a more empowered and informed customer base.
Despite the encouraging results, the MCA acknowledges that challenges remain, particularly in ensuring consistent service quality and closing the digital gap for the few households still offline.
