Catania Airport fire cancels several Air Malta flights

A fire that broke out at Catania Airport has suspended operations at the airport until 14:00 Wednesday 19th July, leading to several flights being cancelled for the duration.

This comes after further disruption caused in Italy’s airports brought on by a nationwide strike, which saw a number of flights affected on Saturday 15th July.

The following Air Malta flights were cancelled.

• 17.07.2023 – KM642/3
• 18.07.2023 – KM640/1
• 18.07.2023 – KM644/5
• 18.07.2023 – KM642/3
• 19.07.2023 – KM640/1

Customers who had booked to travel on any of the above flights were informed that they may either cancel their booking and receive a full refund, or rebook to an alternative date.

The fire broke out inside the airport during the evening on Sunday 16th July.

According to reports, the first distress call arrived at Catania’s fire brigade operations room at 11:29pm on Sunday. The fire was subsequently extinguished, and aside from some individuals recovering from smoke inhalation, no serious injuries were reported.

“We thank the fire brigade, state bodies, first aid responders and the airport community for having acted promptly,” read a statement issued by the airport.
