A Czech motorway vignette website, CzechVignette.cz, has ranked Malta as the best European country for a summer road trip, due to its low fuel prices.
At €1.34 per litre, Malta currently enjoys the most affordable petrol in Europe, just ahead of North Macedonia at €1.38 pet litre, Poland at €1.40, Moldova at €1.44 and San Marino at €1.47.
This is the result of a Government strategy to subsidise fuel and electricity costs, shielding the Maltese market from international energy volatility.
At the other end of the scale, petrol is currently most expensive in Denmark, where it currently costs €2.39 per litre, followed by the Netherlands (€2.26), Finland (€2.18 per litre), Switzerland (€2.05 per litre), and Liechtenstein (€2.04).
“Petrol is one of the biggest expenses on a driving holiday, particularly for travellers covering long distances over several days,” remarked CzechVignette.cz COO Freek Jurg.
“Where you choose to road trip can have a significant impact on your overall budget, with drivers paying more than €1 extra per litre in some countries compared to others”
Besides Malta’s low fuel prices, Mr Jurg said the island offers everything from UNESCO-listed cities to prehistoric temples that predate the Egyptian pyramids.
He added that the country’s small size makes it easy to travel the whole country by car.
Malta has budgeted €172 million on energy support measures for 2026, slightly more than the €152 million it is estimated to have spent in 2025 but lower than the €183 million it spent in 2024.
However, the country has continued to reduce its deficit and exited the EU’s emergency deficit procedures this month.
It also forecasts a continued improvement in Malta’s public finances over the coming years
