Election Day 2026: Malta goes to the polls today

Malta heads to the polls today to elect a new government, with voters across Malta and Gozo casting their ballots in the 2026 general election.

Polling stations are open from 7am and close at 10pm, with counting expected to begin the next morning.

For the Labour Party, the election, called a year before the end of its mandate, presents an opportunity to secure a fourth consecutive electoral victory, extending a run that began in 2013. For the Nationalist Party, it represents a chance to return to government after more than a decade in opposition.

ADPD, Momentum, Aħwa Maltin and Imperium Europa are also fielding candidates and two independents are also running.

Voters are to attend the polling centre address indicated on their voting document, while the Electoral Commission is allowing those who are flying out of Malta on the same day of the election to skip queues, so long as they provide documented evidence of a confirmed travel booking to a police officer in charge at any given polling centre.

After polling stations close this evening at 10pm, sealed boxes will be reconciled and taken to the Naxxar counting hall, where the counting staff will begin the process of turning the ballots face down to be organised at the counting desks.

An indication of the result could be clear by Sunday morning, with more detailed results about the exact formation of the next legislature to follow afterwards.
