Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating new opportunities that could help strengthen and improve various services in Malta.

The Government of Malta has launched a Council for Governance in Artificial Intelligence, which will strategically monitor Government initiatives related to AI.

The Council will be led by the Chief AI Officer Jonathan Gerada, alongside the Unit for Governance in Artificial Intelligence.

According to the Government, the council will also include representatives from various public entities, with the aim of ensuring that the use of AI complies with the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act.

The Council was launched in the same week that the EU’s transparency rules on AI are set to officially come into force, requiring certain AI-generated content to be clearly labelled and introducing transparency requirements for providers of AI systems, including chatbots.
