The total passenger car capacity of the Gozo Channel fleet will increase by 117 vehicles once the investment announced yesterday is complete.
As it stands, the four ferries cater for a combined total of 508 cars, with the Nikolaos carrying the most at 160 vehicles and the Gaudos the least at 72.
The Ta’ Pinu and Malita vessels each cater for 138 cars.
However, the combined total will increase to 625 once the investment is complete in the coming years.
The Nikolaos will be replaced by a larger ferry that can carry up to 250 cars while the Gaudos will be replaced by a similar-sized vessel with a 75-car capacity.
Once retrofitting on the Ta’ Pinu and Malita vessels is complete, their capacity will slightly increase to 150 cars each.
Drivers will also benefit from more space on the ferries as large trucks and trailers transporting cargo will no longer use the Ċirkewwa port, but depart from the Freeport and the Grand Harbour on a repurposed Gaudos.
